OUR GOATS ARE FREE RANGED ALL NATURAL GOATS
We let our goats be goats the way nature intended. We never lock them up in a barn , shoot them full of vaccines or feed them concentrates.
We have learned that natural is indeed best. The creator has a master plan and we are sticking to the natural path. Our does kid in the open field or run in barn or up in the tree line as they choose, we allow them the choice. We do observe them while kidding, for entertainment purposes only (if its daylight and we happen to be around ), we have found that our herd does just fine without our intervention. Just like a deer in the woods. We do feed our goats a free choice organic loose mineral supplement with probiotics , kelp , garlic and redman trace minerals which we purchase from Countryside Naturals, they love it and thrive on it. They have automatic waterers and lots of room to roam and browse on both local vegetation and select improved forages. I have planted forage chicory, lezpedeza and cereal rye to supplement the native forages. Goats do love redroot pigweed so if you got it use it to your advantage its great goat food and naturalizes like crazy. It is my opinion that many people over feed and over medicate their goats this will indeed lead to them overworking themselves. Which came first the feedstore or the goat?
Now its time to get someone upset, it might be you but I hope not. Meat goat "breeds" are a sensitive subject seems like every breeder has a favorite.
Nothing wrong with that, you should feel good about what you are working with it makes it less work and more pleasure. The best advice I can give any new person thinking about raising meat goats is to READ THE RESEARCH LITERATURE by Dr. Richard Browning , Dr. Maria L.Browning, Dr. Frank Pinkerton, Dr. Lou Nuti and Dr. Phil Sponenberg there is a powerhouse of information and real knowledge there. Of course there are others but I have found these works to be excellent and quite clear. From these writings I HAVE GLEANED THAT THERE IS NO ONE PERFECT BREED of meat goat.
Now don't GET ALL UPSET about this ,theres a good reason for it being the truth. It is location . Different goats for different areas of the country and the world. Environment shapes a lot of things in life. I have choosen to work with Kiko and Spanish does as my maternal genetic base. Published research articles and then my personal observations have left me very pleased with both of these "breeds " as momma goats. They simply get the job done with the least intervention on my part and that is wonderful! I started with Kiko x Spanish does and had excellent results as a newbie. I was at that time a student of the Kiko breed. I attributed the superior results of my early breedings to be the direct result of my excellent choice in a Kiko buck .I had embarked on the shortest way to goat heaven breeding up to pure Kiko as fast as possible became my goal. Well we did that for about five years and got some really nice maternal does, we still have them and they still perform well as commercial production does. Now it occurs to me that as I objectively assess my herds production that in all these years of upgrading the newest generation of does are not really outperformimg the crosses we began with.
That is to say there is no exponentially large difference in the number of kids being born and raised to weaning and processing age. I had mostly twins and an ocassional triplet in the beginning and we still have the same. The enviroment and management here have remained constants. So now that I have learned to be more objective read open minded, it appears that for commercial production based goat ranchers individual doe performance is more important to your bottomline than breed name. I have adopted the performance colony approach to breeding on my farm, I want the best commercial production nannies, good Kiko and Spanish and Kiko x Spanish does work for me! Since we retain our production for value added marketing our goal is to have a uniform kid crop to harvest at six months of age with very little variation in live weights. Dr.Lou Nuti and Dr. Phil Sponenberg have convinced me that a good Myotonic buck brings the heterosis needed in a terminal sire breed . So we are now using Myotonic bucks .Why would you not want a higher meat to bone ration with good feed conversion and proven parasite resistance on board? We are on our way and pleased. I THANK THE RESEARCHERS FOR SETTING THINGS STRAIGHT without breed bias. The Kiko and Valera Strain of Spanish does are our choice but only the good ones. We will
keep a smaller Myotonic goat herd for creating heterosis and because my wife likes them!
